Young-Sun Lee is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice moves across dance, choreography, visual art, writing, video, digital art, and design. Her artistic interests continue to evolve across different forms and mediums, allowing ideas and inspiration to move freely between them. Currently based in Korea, she runs her own creative studio, where she develops and produces her work.
Lee holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where she received a Creative and Performing Arts Fellowship and a full scholarship. During her three-year program at UIUC, she taught jazz, ballet, and modern dance as a graduate teaching assistant.
She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from Hannam University in Daejeon, Korea, and studied English Literature at Seattle Pacific University in Washington, USA, as an exchange student on scholarship. She was also accepted into the graduate program in choreography at Korea National University of Arts in Seoul with a scholarship, where she completed the coursework.
Beyond formal education, Lee has continued her artistic development through extensive physical training and collaborations with artists from different countries and disciplines. These experiences have shaped her distinctive approach to art, which is rooted in the body while remaining open to different forms of expression.
Her works have been presented at venues in Korea and the United States, including the Hanguk Performing Arts Center (Hanpac) and Insa Art Gallery in Seoul; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles; Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in North Carolina; and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Illinois.
Her body of work includes the Snail Series (Snail I–IV), Young Sun Lee Series, Fish on a Tree in a Little Pond, Wallpaper, Afternoon Illusion, Solitary Room Talks to Me, Annoying, Homer & Apple, Subsidence, and other works.
In addition to live performance, Lee works across video, writing, drawing, visual installation, and books. Her works and ongoing projects are presented and archived on this website.
